O dia da panqueca/ Pancake day

If you aren’t British and are reading the tittle of this article you maybe think this is one of the unusual non-sense celebrations someone has just created. Of course, pancakes are delicious and there are so many pancake lovers worldwide and so many different recipes from different nations. Beyond the flavours the pancake day has its history.

On the same Tuesday we celebrate carnival in Brazil British people celebrate the pancake day or the Shrove Tuesday, as it is also called. For both Brazilian and British people, the meaning behind the celebration is similar, they mark the preparation for the lent, that historically is a period of spiritual self-guard and fasting. For Brazilians this preparation is five days of intense partying, starting on the Friday before until the Carnival Tuesday. In the Anglo-Saxon and Christian Great-Britain it was common people shrive before the lent, this is why it’s called Shrove Tuesday and the pancakes were the last opportunity of having a fatty delicious food before the lent.

I have to say the way Brazilians prepare for the lent is much more intense, five days partying, while the British way is modest with a plate of pancakes. Unfortunately, in these pandemic times we can’t celebrate carnival with all the joy we used to, but pancakes are still possible.

Beyond being a fatty and sugary deliciousness, the ingredients also have a religious meaning.

Ovos – representam a criação

Trigo – O esteio da vida

Sal – Salubridade

Leite – Pureza

Egg – Creation

Wheat – The staff of life

Salt – Wholesomeness

Milk – Purity

In the video below you can check a Victorian pancake recipe. This video is part of English Heritage, that cares about English monuments and history.

I will also share my recipe of pancakes. My husband loves the American style pancakes, the fluffy ones that have baking powder in the batter. These are the ones I normally make in home.

Ingredientes:

Ingredients:

- ¾ cup of flour

- 2 medium eggs

- 50g of melted butter

- ½ cup of milk

- 3 tbsp of sugar*

- 1 tsp of vanilla extract (or essence)

- ½ tbsp of baking powder

- a pinch of salt

* The recipe asks for 3 tbsp, but I normally use just one.

Preparo:

How to make it:

In a smaller bowl combine the flour, the baking powder and the salt. In a bigger bowl mix the eggs with sugar, add vanilla extract, milk and melted butter. Sieve the flour, baking powder and salt over the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Heat a frying pan, put some oil and spread it using a paper towel. Put the amount of 1/3 cup of the batter in the centre of the frying pan, don’t spread the batter. When it starts bubbling, it’s time to flip. Fry for some seconds in the other side and remove from the pan. Repeat the process with the rest of the batter.

It can be served with maple syrup, honey, jam or any fruit sauce you prefer. Bacon is also a common topping.

Another tip I have is to substitute half of the milk for chocolate liqueur (you also can use Baileys or Amarula liqueur) and when the batter is on the pan add some chocolate chips.

A brief video I recorded about it.

I hope you enjoyed this little curiosity about British culture and the UK and you may enjoy eating some pancakes on pancake day.

Bicoitos para o Imbolc/ Biscuits for Imbolc

I told in the previous post I celebrated Imbolc this year and for this celebration I baked some biscuits. Before talking about the Imbolc biscuits, I have to tell where this recipe comes from.

Last Year I celebrated Halloween in an online meeting with my friends, first because we were and still are in a pandemic and it’s not possible have a party. Second: I wanted to do it with my friends and not with other people I barely knew. For that day I baked witch’s finger biscuits, I had to adapt a recipe I found on internet that wasn’t completely correct. Bellow there’s the recipe I used as a base for my witch’s finger biscuit and for the Imbolc biscuits.

Ingredientes:

- 1 xícara de farinha de trigo;

- ¼ de xícara de açúcar;

- 80g de manteiga sem sal;

- 2 ovos médios;

- ½ colher de sopa de fermento em pó químico;

Ingredients:

- 1 cup of plain white flour (or all purposes flour);

- ¼ cup of sugar;

- 80g of unsalted butter;

- 2 medium eggs;

-1/2 tbsp of baking powder;

- 1 tsp of vanilla extract (or essence).

Sieve the flour and the sugar inside a large bowl, add the rest of the ingredients, model the biscuits as you like. For Halloween I made them in witch’s finger shape and put an almond to make the nail. Place the biscuits in a tray that was lined with baking paper and bake them in a pre-heated oven for 15 minutes at 180ºC (or 356ºF).

When I made the biscuits for Halloween, I loved the flavour, but I dislike the single almond lost in the biscuit, which was also sharp and I was afraid it could hurt the roof of my mouth. Then for the next times I decided to make these biscuits I chopped the almonds and also added other ingredients I like. Instead of modelling the witch’s fingers I just put the correspondent amount of a tablespoon of the dough on a tray, then they got this rustic aspect that I like. For Imbolc I added ingredients that had a magical correspondence. The list of them is down below.

- ½ xícara de amêndoas picadas

- ½ xícara de cramberries secas (craisins)

- 100g de gotas de chocolate branco

- ½ xícara de sementes de girassol (sem casca)

- 2 colheres de sopa de gergelim

- ½ cup of chopped almonds

- ½ cup of dried cramberries (craisins)

- 100g of White chocolate chips

- ½ cup of sunflower seeds (without the shells)

- 2 tbsp of sesame seeds

These ingredients can be added to the dough after sieving the flour and the sugar, before the rest of the ingredients, they give lots of flavour and texture to the biscuits. I’ll just make a brief comment about the magical correspondence of this ingredients.

Amêndoas: ligadas a sorte e a prosperidade.

Gergelim: atrai dinheiro.

Almonds: luck and prosperity.

Cramberries: abundance, rejuvenation and courage.

White chocolate: Friendship and self-love.

Sunflower seeds: self-confidence, abundance and happiness.

Sesame seeds: attract money.

If you decide to make this recipe with magical purpose to attract good things to your life and to all the people who eat them, it’s important to consecrate the ingredients before and set your intentions; but if you don’t mind the magic, you will still enjoy the flavour.

Minha celebração do Imbolc/ My Imbolc celebration

I don’t have a specific religion, my paths in the spiritual journey are very unique, but I admit I have a strong connection with paganism and it started in my early teenage. In that time, I wasn’t mature enough to comprehend most things I was learning and dealing with. During some years I kept myself away from everything related to religion or spirituality, after a while I wanted to reconnect to it.

Since I started studying about paganism, I always wanted to celebrate the Sabbats (the wiccan holidays), but every time I read something about this it always looked so complicated. I had my spiritual journey and I missed someone my age to celebrate with me. My family always gave me lots of freedom to explore any kind of knowledge about religion and anything else I wanted, but most of my friends had families totally different from mine and very strict about religion. I felt very lonely about my spiritual journey and maybe this was one of the reasons why I had depression when teenager. Added to this, being a teenager, itself is tough. Everything in this period of our existence seems so dramatically and intensely terrible.

The first sabbat I celebrated was in 2017, when my best friend’s partner said he wanted to be part of a “wiccan dinner party”, so I gave the idea of celebrating a sabbat, that in that occasion was Yule (the winter solstice). I was so happy for being able to celebrate it with my friends, it was a joyful night and I was so thankful for that connection with my friends and with the spirituality, and I was also thankful for every single person that made that dinner party possible.

We know 2020 was a very difficult year for all us, mostly because of the pandemic, but also other problems we had last year. When 2021 started I felt this need of celebrating the sabbats. I started posting some stories about it on my Instagram and many people were curious, then I recorded a video explaining about the wheel of year and the first sabbats we celebrate in 2021.

The sabbats are different in the north hemisphere and in the south hemisphere, on the 1st of February was Imbolc in the north hemisphere and Lammas in the south hemisphere, I recorded a video about both.

Lastly a vlog about my Imbolc celebration.

I hope everyone have a prosper year full of dreams coming true in our lives.

Algumas dificuldades culturais/ Some cultural Struggles

I know many people are interested about the experience of living abroad, there’s always some friend or relative asking me about it. Even me, before coming to the UK for the first time used to research on blogs and Youtube channels about Brazilians living here and their experience, so now it’s my turn to tell my experience.First, I have to say that travelling to a country as tourist is completely different from living in it, specially if you become part of a family from that country like I am right now, it’s amazing being immersed in the British culture but there are some cultural struggles. No one tells you about some struggles we have in a different culture, but I am here to do it.

1) Language – it doesn’t matter how much time you spent studying English in your life, there are certain things books will never teach you, you need an immersion experience.

a) Relearn the language – This was the first thing I had to do, relearn my English, in Brazil most people learn American English, and coming to the UK I had to learn the proper British English, but being honest with you, this wasn’t the most difficult part at all, I had to change the pronunciation, I had to change the vocabulary. There were other most difficult language challenges in this journey.

b) The cultural use of language – Language is full of hidden cultural meanings that just who lives in that place knows. I had a Caribbean teacher, she moved to Brazil with all her family when she was still a little girl and she told me one thing about the cultural use of Brazilian Portuguese that was difficult for her mother to adapt. When someone offered her a cup of coffee, for example, and she said “Thank you” and kept waiting for the coffee that never came, because in Brazil if you say just “Thank you” when someone offer you something they will understand “No, thank you”. It’s just a silly example, but there are lots of little things like this that can make you feel lost, the funny part is even people that are native in the same language but from different countries can be confused about these cultural uses in language, like American and British people or Brazilian and Portuguese.

c) Regionalism – I was living in London for a bit more than a month, on my first time here, I thought I had enough knowledge about British English, then I decided to go to Glasgow (in Scotland), I was in a McDonald’s looking at the attendant without understanding one single word and a boy, I think he was eight, looking at me and he tried to help me, “translating” for an English I could be able to understand. I am sure he was feeling so sorry about me that he decided to help me, that was cute, but I felt like all my years learning English were useless in that moment, I couldn’t understand Scottish English. Some years later I discovered sometimes Americans struggle to understand Scottish English too, the same way Brazilians struggle to understand Portuguese people. You will deal with different accents and regionalism, no one tells you how difficult is to understand some of them.

2 – Unidades de medida – Algumas delas eu já me acostumei, outras eu ainda me confundo.

2 – Units of measurement – Some of them I’m already used to, some I still struggle. In some situations, they use units of measurement that we also use in Brazil (centimetres, meters, kilogram…) and sometimes they use others that we don’t know well (inches, feet, pounds, stones…). At least in the UK they use Celsius instead of Fahrenheit.

3- Celebrations – the important holliday celebrations and the way they are celebrated change a lot in Brazil and in the UK. I could write a whole article about the difference in between British and Brazilian Christmas. And there are so many more… On the Good Friday they eat hot cross bun. On the Tuesday we celebrate Carnival in Brazil, they celebrate the Pancake Day, I also have to mention in November they wear poppies to remember the soldiers who died in the war and also the bonfire night – if you don’t know it you can get confused about the firework.

4 – References you don’t have a clue – Jokes about celebrities you have no idea who they are, historical facts, childhood games… There’s always someone who will say something that you have no clue what they are talking about, because sometimes they forget you live in that country for a certain period of time and not your whole life,

5 – The way people interact to each other – friendship, romantic relationships, familiar relationships… in Certain ways they are still the same, but different at the same time. The feelings and the affection are still the same, but there are some few details that change. Brazilians are tactile, we like to kiss people on their cheeks and hug… even people we don’t know well, the European way is more like a handshake. Of course, I’m talking about a pre-pandemic environment, because nowadays we keep social distance. And there’s always some non-written rules about what you can or can’t talk to someone. As a Brazilian we think it’s normal to ask to someone we don’t know well, but is in a long term relationship, if or when they will get married and people can see this as something rude in the UK.

These were just some examples of cultural struggles. There are things I can deal better than others and there were things more difficult for me in the past than now they are pretty easy. If you intend to leave abroad in any moment of your life, I advise you:  first, research about the local culture and be open minded. Remember, when you don’t understand some situation or feel confuse you can always try to ask someone that’s native and that you trust to try to explain to you. There's a video bellow explaining a bit more about my experience, unfortunatelly just in Portuguese.

Livros lidos em 2020 – Books I read in 2020

I Always loved to read, but I admit there were moments in my life when I read more and other moments when I read less, for many personal reasons. The last three years of my life was a long period of less reading, I think I read a maximum of three books per year, then in the end of 2019 I set as my new year’s resolution reading more, I thought my life would be more stable in 2020 and I set a goal of reading at least 10 books. Unfortunately, 2020 truly disappointed us all with the pandemic and I lost my wish and inspiration for doing many things, including reading. Although I was able of finishing seven books and as they are just some few titles I will tell some words about each of them.

1 – At the back of the North Wind – George McDonalds

This was one of the books that Princess Skye, from Princess Portal recommended (Check the list here). I downloaded it for free in Kobo website, I had it for a long time and never had read it. It’s a child’s book, the story is about a boy called Diamond and once the North Wind came to visit him, it is represented by a mystical lady, she took him on her back and flew with him for living amazing adventurous, some of the chapters were in London, where I actually live and it made this book even more enchanting to me.

2 – O Fantasma da Ópera /The Phantom of the Opera – Gaston Leroux

This one I could also download for free in Kobo website, I don’t have my kobo e-reader anymore, but I still have my account so I can use the app on my laptop, tablet or even cell phone. I watched two different versions of the Phantom of the Opera before, but I had never read the book. We planed watching the musical in London on my birthday weekend that didn’t happen because of the pandemic, but the experience reading the book was marvellous. I love the Phantom of the Opera, it wasn’t a new story for me, but I could know the real story and all the language details that just literature can provide to us.

3 – The Etiquette of Dress

A friend gave me this book, I wrote to posts about it on this blog, connecting it to lolita fashion. It is a compilation of Victorian and Edwardian etiquette rules about female garment, it was made by the British Library. There are other books of Victorian and Edwardian etiquette for different situations and I put them all in my wish list.

4 – História do Olho/Story of the Eye – George Bataille

This is one of the weirdest books I’ve read in my life, I can’t remember why, exactly, I got interest for reading it, but I downloaded it for free. It’s an erotic book, some people suppose it was inspired by the author real story and he wrote after some psychotherapy sessions, they say he had some sexual perversion problems. The book is full of strange sexual scenes and stories in between him and his girlfriend; but beyond the bizarre, the book has a deep reflection about existence, pleasure and scape of the normality.

This book was in my reading plan since I started studying for my master’s degree, I bought it years ago and paid very cheap for its digital version, but I had never read it until last year, when I started reading in the gym using my cell phone. What I like the most about this book is the Ancient Age idea of destiny, being something fatalist, we could never escape.

6 – This Golden Fleece – Esther Rutter

I borrowed this book from a lady in the craft meeting group that I used to go before the pandemic. The book is about the history of knitting in Great-Britain and the importance of fleece and wool through the centuries, beyond fashion the book shows the fleece history in sports, culture, tradition and so many other details in the lives of the British people, from ancient age to nowadays. After this I read an article by the same author about how sewing helped people to keep their mental health in the hard times in UK. Fantastic!

7 – Existencialismo é Humanismo/Existencialism is humanism – Jean-Paul Sartre

Since I first heard about Sartre I Always wanted to read more about his ideas, I found many things in his theories and philosophy current that like and agree, I share the same believes and life perspective that I see in his book, specially about human beings being the main responsible for their life changings and the power we have in our choices. It was so pleasant reading this book, that’s a transcription of a Sartre’s lecture, explaining his theories.

In this article I didn’t mean to do a deep analysis of the books I read, but say briefly why I chose them and how was my experience. I hope you have enjoyed and it can bring some inspiration for the books you may read in the future. Bellow there's a video of me talking about this book, unfortunately just in Portuguese.
